WAIKATO RACES.

To me Editor of the Waivato 'liMEa. Sip., — Tie Ca-obncl^e p -oplo appear to be mtont on gdtu.g vp mcc, "i"-*' the end ot February or early in Mi"h 1 taiuk ii" v D ft-i excellent opportunity for the Wnkaio scttllomcnts to cast otf tho mantle of jealousy, and to act in concert and wilh good feohng in promoting and organising anything that is for the good of oiir district. Somo two years ago tho " W>uk.ito Jockey Club" wa3 started with a flourish of trumpet*, and His Excellency Sir George Bowen became patron of it. Tho secretary was indefatigable* in his exertions to form the Club and get up races; not sinco he has turned his peutcri into plough- shares— a change has como o'er the shadow of his droam, and racing has lost its charm. I woulll suggest that some of the members of the W J. C. ihould write ta tho Prendent (Colonel Lyon) and lequcst to him to call a meeting at an early date and that the treasurer should attend with tho accounts : it vi 1 then be seen if the Club is in fund 3 or not. The various settlements could then collect inscriptions, and a really good race meeting may be held early in March under the control of the W. J. C. No doubt the rub will be, " Where is it to bo h«ld ?" Each placo will want it. Now let us, for this time, and for ever, drop all such narrow-miudod nonsense and hold tho meeting where thoro in tho best 1 course, and most convenient, or let it be held at the township wlioso district gives tho largest subscription. If the matter were taken up, and theW.J. C. kept together, numbers of gentlomon would join the Club, but unless it is a bonafide Waikato affair, and not kept in one settlement it will not succeed. I should like to see thi raoe confined to horses, tho property of Waikato settler*, at anj rate for this year. Trusting a goad mooting may be got up. I am, yours, faithfulh, llbd Cuff.
