TE A WA MUTU.
ritou otra ooubespondent. Jf . Jff^^ NEVES, I tiliink, since the various settlement m. M trict wcro formed was a morej enjoyable day pW" se rthan by those present at our annual races lield here ytwJiSSay. Tho day was certainly a warm one, but temperedJßp» a deligh.tr ful breezev As early as ten o'clock partitfs- of well-dressed, and moUntod equestrians could bo seen anting from every direction to the centre of attraction — our fl^-course, — and by 12 o'clock certainly not less than 200 monnted holidayseekers, with a large number m vehicles and on foot, were assembled on the ground to witness the sports, a. fair proportion of them being of the "air sex. The first event >on the programme was the maiden plate of 8 soys, one and a-half miles, weight for age, with 10s entrance added. There wero four entries for this raeej viz. :— Mr Meaghan's black mare Minnie, Keighloy. ; Mr T. Wetlwrell's bay mare Dolly Varden, Appleyard ; J. Scott's Fly (1), Wilson; J. T. Boon's Lady Don, S. Bond. Betting even on Lady Don against the field. This was a well contested race, but the result quite upset the calculatiqns of the knowing ones, as Lady Don had somehow or another obtained the reputation of being a flyer. A good, start was made, Fly making the running, closely followed by Minnie for the first time round,, then Minnie shot aliead, obtained a good' leadv Fly second ; but, unfortunately, Minnie bolted- just before reaching the i winning post, when Fly obtained the victory, Dolly Varde^^ second, the favorite last. For the Pon-y Race, of 8 soys, 14 hands and under, ono j mile, catch weights, entrance-, 10s, there were three i entries : — Mr Stitchbury's cream Wahine, Kennedy 1 '. Mr Bond's black Lanty, Higginaon ... ...- ... 2 Mr Miller's grey Ghuneboy, Si Wilson ... . . 3 — This was a splendid race, and a deal of money changed hands. Lanty, who- has been the- champion here for the last two years, was thought by many to bo unapproachable, and 2 to 1 was freely offered. Wahine is an Auckland pony, and a rare good one. G-ameboy was also fancied by many, he having distinguished 1 himself m his time. The ponies jumped away together from the scratch, Wahine and Lanty A keeping well together; After a most exciting race, Wahine lr came m winner by half a-length. Steeplechase, 9'sova, two miles, weight for' age ; entrance^* 103. Thive entries : ' Mr A. Kay's by g Costello, owner ... ... ... 1 Mr T. Wotherell's bm Dolly Varden, Appleyard ... 2 Mr W. Bond's c g Bob, owner 3 Tins race was a gift to Costello, who went away with: the lead, which he- kept easily. .The rider's stirrup leatherbroke at the first jump, but notwithstanding this, the horse was ridden as well and as pluckily as ever araco was ridden. I mention this because I have heard the leather had been: purposely cut. I hope, however^ there must be a mistakeabout this. For the Te Awamutu Cup, of 10 soys, two miles, weighfc^^ for age, entrance 15s, there wero three entries :. d& Mr H. Turner's Billy Barlow, G. Finch >;.. ... 1 Mr H. Reynolds' Shandygaff, Appleyard 2 Mr J.T. Boon's LvdyDjn, S. Bond 3 This was won easily by Billy Barlow. The old horse had it his own way ; the flyer nowhere. Tho G-alloway Race, of 8 soys, 14 hands 2 inches and under, one and a-half miles, catch weights ; entrance 10a. There were five entries for this race : j* Mr Stitchbury's Wahine, Kennedy....*. ...., 'f* 1 Mr W. Bond's Lanty, Higginson ../ V .& 2 Mr J. Scott's Fly, G-. Wilson ... .:. ..: 3 Mr J. T Boon's Lady Don •>. 0 """ Mr Bertram's Skittles .... ..... 0 This was a good race from the start to the finish, but Wahino was too good for her company For the Hack Race there were 10 entries ; distance, onomile. Mr Theycr's Rawbonos, Higginson ... ... ... 1 As is frequently the- case, this race gave as good sport as any on the list, Rawb'ones ran well, and was ■* splendidly ridden by the boy. Consolation Stakes of s>sovsj one mi'e handicap, entrance,.^^ ss. There were four entries : A Mr Bertram's Skittles, Bst 41b, J. Ready ... ... 1 ■ Mr W. Bond's Lanty, 7 st 71b, Higginson ... ... 2 Mr W. Bonds- Bob, lOst ... 0 Mr Meaghnn's Minnie, 7st 101 b 0 This was a close race, but Skittles managed to first catch' the judge's attention. For the Maori Knee there were five entries. Wonby i Souther's Tare. A A Hurry Scurry, won by ahorse belonging to R. Hoggin- M son, concluded the clay's sport, without, I am happy t$ accident or altercation. Great credit is due to tho^workiug; 1 ■ stewards m preparing tho course, and the satistactory M manner they carried out the day's sports. For Mr Hender- 1 son, our esteemed- judge ;Mr Wethcrell, clerk of the eourae ;. 1 Messrs Roche and Davidson, treasurer and secretary ;: and^ last, though not least, Mr James Watters, starter, for the^ fair and impartial manner m which he performed his. responsible duties, the thanks of the district are due, as L have before- stated, for about the plcasantcst day's meettSgever held m- tho Upper Waipa. Since the above was written- the stewards have awarded the Maiden Plate to Mr Scott's Fly. She was disqualified for carrying over weight without declaring, but her ownerlodged a protcst,%hich has been sustained by tho committee.
