(From the Daily Boijthmn Cross.) LATEST SOUTHERN NEWS. Wellington, Wednesday. The Press Conference met this morning and was adjourned until Friday. His Honor the Superintendent opened the Provincial Council at noon to-day. Great, curiosity is i'elt as to his statement regarding the Superintendency. The Council-room was crowded with memhers of the General Assembly. Mr Fitzherbcrt stated that upon the defeat of the Fox-Vogel Ministry all the Wellington members with the exception of the member for Rangitikei joined in requesting him to become a mr.nber of any new Grovernment that may be formed. He objected strongly, but was overruled ; and, upon accepting office, communicated with the Government regarding a dissolution of the Provincial Council, and obtained the opinions of members by letter. He joined Mr Stafford's Government upon the distinct understanding that it would be based upon the unity of the colony and the seat of Government at Wellington. He reminded members of Mr Vogel's statement, that so long as Wellington members conducted themselves properly the seat of Government would not be removed, and that insular separation would not be thought of. The position of the province's affairs was satisfactory. The action of the members for the pi-ovince in the General Assembly during the session had been most patriotic without any exception. Mr Bunny gave notice of motion that it is desirable that the Council be dissolved. The s.s. Tarauaki has arrived. The Wellington sailed to-day for the Manukau. Thursday. The Wellington Provincial Council has been dissolved. The G-overnment p.s. Luna has sailed for Chatham Islands with 30 members of the Armed Constabulary under Colonel St. John. A proclamation in the Gazette to-day says that the Governor will forthwith enter into negotiations with nntive owners for the purchase of the blocks of
land commonly Known as capo uoivuie peninsula. Dunedin, Wednesday. Plummer, for being illegally at large, has been sentenced to 2\ years' imprisonment, cumulative with five years for other offences. Kowland, for wife-beating has been sentenced to three months' imprisonment. Evitt, for larceny, has been sentenced to two years' imprisonment, Thursday. £400 worth, of gold was lost at Mataura by the overturning of Mr Coulman's buggy. It has gince been recovered. The <SWsavsthatMrMacandrew, Superintendent, offered to reinstate Mr Reid as Provincial Secretary, after the defeat of the Stafford G-overnment. The p.s. Charles Edward has been chartered to proceed to Martin's Bay. The Civil Sittings of the Supreme Court will be unusually heavy. Christchurch. Wednesday, j At the Supreme Court, Miller, charged with assault, was discharged. Charles Henry Matthews, for housebreaking, wps discharged. Pawcett, a brickmaker, has been found, dead in a paddock. He had been drinking hapd. Thursday. At a meeting of the Collegiate Union the Auckland University Bill was strongly condemned. It was resolved to petition both Houses of the Legislature against it, and in favour of one University

Mr Vogel said lie had been sent for by the Governor and had undertaken to form a MinistryThursday. Mr Waterhouse accepts the Premiership. It is probable the new Migisfry will be aunouu'vd upon the meeting of tho Jlou.k- to-morrow by Mr Vogel. It will include Messrs Vogel, Me Lean, and Hall. Rumour says thai Mr Ormond will take the oflice of Minister of Public Works till the end of the session. No other Ministers will be appointed till the recess.
