Christchurch. J. Miller, farmer, is committed for trial for fracturing a man's skull with an iron bar.. Hunt Club Steeplechase.—lst race : Bismark, 1 ; Harlequin, 2; Merrimac bolted off the course.— Second race : Royalty, 1. Dunedin. The Government immigrants per Hydaspes are found to* be a very suitable class. Most of them have been engaged at fair wages. The cattle disease reported at the Heads proves to be mange, of a purely local character, probably causedby want of pasturageAt Oamaru a public meeting was held, condemning the sale of 10,000 acres of land at Marewhenua to R. Campbell. A deputation was appointed to see the Government, and endeavour to stop the sale, as it would prove most injurious to miners. Tauranga, Monday. The s.s. Southern Cross arrived here at 7 o'clock last evening.. The natives of Whangamata are engaged in angry strife about land lately surveyed; tliey are expected to fight. Taranaki, 12.35 p.m. Mr Atkinson's election is considered safe. PARLIAMENTARY NEWS. Mr Gillies has given notice that he will ask leave to bring in a bill to empower Road Boards to borrow money. In reply to a question from Kelly, Stafford stated that he did not intend to hand ovßr the administration of any portion of confiscated lands to the Provincial authorities, nor did Jie intend to abandon any of such lands,., but would' deal with them on principles already announced. Mr Reid said he would endeavour to procure a Public Works Statement to-morrow. The delay was caused. by his- discovery last night of liabilities of which he was not previously aware.
