The telegram* to linnet with, regard to tne futuie Ministry arc so contradictory that it is almost impossible to venture an opinion as to its probable composition. 13v our latest telegrams wo learn that Mi Gillies has accepted the position of Colonial Treasurer. Unless we have been very much deceived by the antecedents of this gentleman. Ave are of opinion that the appointment, if it. has taken place, can only be looked upon as a proof that, on Mr Stafford's side of the House there is a great dearth of ability ; and that Mr Fitzherbert, after having carefully ballanced the advantages of pay a-s a member of the against the provincial loaves and fishes already netted, and the pension that would cease on his taking his sest on the Ministerial benches has. declined office; he, both from necessity and inclination,
has always considered £ ». d. when culled upon to give a political opinion cither by word or action. Wo may, therefore, conclude that this think* now forming ie it »V jfioly lo'hwr* a lory* life. It Has been rumoured, arid "afterwards contradicted, that Mr Watcrhouse has counted to act with; Mr Stafford. Wo arc jnclined 'to think, arid wo are -eorry tl&t we are compelled t# do ho, that the rumour i-i unfounded, for there is no manga either house whom, we should so gladly see a mwinTfcar of the Govermnefrt. Since he was caller!" to t he Council he lias not spoken often, but the tone of the 8 >eeches lie has delivered give the impression that he is an able statesman, and one not likely to resort to any of those mean trick* lor the rake of retaining office which have too often pi" late characterised the responsible Minister* of the Crown. In the absence of Mr. Fitzherbei-L.ixom the list, and V-he- promotion, as regard* responsibility, of Mr. Gillies, we are bound to look to Mr. Curtis to hold one of the portfolios; and the only one that appears likely to be placed in hi* hands is that of Postmaster-General, with which will be combined probably that of Commissioner of Telegraphs. Mr. Curtis' is a promising appointment; if he docs not add great strength to the party he joins, he at least will not, as in the case of Mr. Gillies, prove a source of weakness. Up to the present time, the prospects of the Stafford party are not at all promising, and it is to be hoped that as there is really no political dilferenee between the two parties, that a coalition ministry will be formed ; we previously expressed the opinion that the followers of Mr. Stafford (unaided) would not be able to form a ministry that could command the confidence of the House and country ; events are proving that we were right in our surmises. Let us hope that the patriotism of some members of the late ministry will induce them to come forward to relieve the country from the disadvantages of being saddled ■with a weak and incompetent ministry.
