PROSPECT u . \ OF “THE WESTERy ST A NEW WEEKLY JOURNAL, TO BE PUBLISHED IN RIVERTON. A DISTRICT without its Public Journal is in the position of a man destitute of the organ of speech. The opinions of its people seldom find expression, its resources and capabilities remain unknown beyond its limits, its requirements hare no exponents, its rights no advocate. No district, capable of defraying Jthe expense, can, without detriment to its every interest, remain unrepresented by the Fourth Estate. In the Western District the truth of these observations has been experienced; and, believing that the time is ripe for the establishment of a Newspaper in the capital town of that important and rising portion of Otago, the proprietors have determined on their enterprise. The Western Stab will contain notes and comments on passing events; articles on topics of public interest; local, colonial, European, and general intelligence ; the latest telegraphic news; and full and reliable agricultural, mining, shipping, and commercial reports. In politics, The Western Stab will be ffee from party bias, ever ready to expose abuse, and equally ready to aid the efforts of those who honestly devote themselves to the public service, so long as they wisely and in a liberal spirit use th« powers they are entrusted with. While specially advocating the interests of the Western District, the Stab will also do all in its power to promote the welfare of the Province and Colony, It will be the ambition of the proprietors to make The Western Stab not only an efficient newspaper but a „recognised organ of public opinion; and they will strive, by honesty of purpose, and the encouragement of full and free discussion, to attain that confidence without which no journal can hope to acquire influence or fulfil the higher portions of its public duties. It will be the constant endeavor of the proprietors to make the Stab the outspoken, fearless exponent of the public opinion, and in every way worthy of the Western District. They trust their efforts will be seconded by the public according liberal support, ~ Arrangements are in progress for securing an extensive circulation for The Western Star, which will render it an excellent advertising medium, A moderate scale of charges for advertisements has been adopted. The term of subscription will be 6s 6d per quarter. AGENTS* Invercargill B- Rrshine. Dunedin ... R- T t Wheeler . Queenstown R- Boyne. Winton ... ... ...
