It is stated that Pouma, the ponfied daughter of Campfire, will finish her racing career at the annual meeting of the Opunake Racing Club. Although on the small side, Pouma was very smart for her inches and weight, and during her racing career has won something like 20 races. That The Hawk is far from a spent light he clearly demonstrated at New Plymouth. Although his success in a great measure was due to skilful riding on the part of R. Reed, nevertheless the son of "Martidn was responsible for a first-class performance. The Hawk looked particularly well, and should earn further successes this season. Rau Rau, the dam of Ardath, is possibly the most prolific matron that has graced Taranaki, as in addition to this newcomer to the jumping business she produced two fine hurdlers in Coronetted and Harbour Light. Other useful performers from Rau Rau wore Golden Eagle, Nicotine® and Henry Clay, while Marsuma, the dam of Par-taga-<and Savory, also claimed Rau Rau as her dam. When the last mail left Melbourne A. Reed was only 34 rides behind W. Dunean for the Melbourne jockey premiership. As Duncan was recently disqualified for a month, and Reed no doubt rode his usual mount, Naos, on February 5, when he won, the New Zealander would seem to have excellent prospects of placing himself at the head of the list. Reed’s riding has lately been earning high praise from the Melbourne critics. An English exchange mentions the , death in a Manchester Hospital of Geo. Donoghue, brother of Steve Donoghue the prominent jockey. George Donoghue was also a jockey at one period, riding winners in England, Ireland and France, but of late years was one of the many tipsters who addressed racegoers before each race, and sold their selections for half a crown. The amount of money the tipsters got in that fashion is surprising. It was always a sore point with Steve Donoghue that his brother was in the racecourse tipster ranks. Travelling with racehorses nowadays is a very costly business, and one of the most -expensive items is railway carriage. For the journey to Trentham and back an Ellerslie trainer, who took three horses for the recent meeting there, had to pay £75 Ils 6d, or a cost of slightly over £25 per horse. This, amount does not include fares for the . horses’ attendants, who . are charged second class fare. It is, therefore, not surprising that owners and trainers ar-"’ not anxious-to travel their horses long journeys ;.unless they have excellent, winning prospects.

The Autumnus gelding. Footfall must rank as one of' the most improved horses of the. season. In the spring he was regarded as no more than a good welter horse, capable of winning, up to a mile and a-quarter in fair company, but he has worked his way into the best class. He has two races at a mile and a-half to his credit this season, the Auckland Racing Club Handicap, and the Dunedin Cup.
