“ELIZA COMES TO STAY.”

x NEXT .WEDNESDAY “Eliza Comes to Stay,” was written by the late Henry V. Edmond, who scored creditable successes with such as “One Summer’s day,’-’ “When We Were .Twenty-one,” and “Billy’s little Love Affair.” “Eliza Comes to Stay” provides a wonderful part for a clever comedy actress, and Miss Zilla Bateman makes the best of it. When the Hon. Sandy Vcrfell is willed “Eliza” by a man who once, saved his life he inherits something that leads him to believe that Eliza is but a blue-eyed, golden-haired child, and it is his delight to prepare for her coming by peopling his flat with all manner of nursery idols. But Eliza proves to be an awkward, gawky young woman who favours prunella boots, blackrimmed spectacles, and has her hair screwed back, into a tight little bun at the back. Verrell, who is engaged to a mercenary actress, is at a loss how to deal with the situation, and takes the of his friend. Montague Jordan, and leaves for the Continent. When Miss Lawrence, an aspirant to honours in serious drama, takes the girl in hand, from a purely womanly standpoint, Mr Jordan teaches her music. Together they affect such a metamorphosis, that “Monty” falls desperately in love with her. and with the aid of Lady Pennybroke is reluctantly accepted, whilst the lady frankly avows her preference for the absent Verrell. The cast includes Miss Z. Bateman as “Eliza,” Mr Campbell Copelin as the Hon Sandy Verrell, Miss Sylvia Clifton as “Vcrc do Vcrc" Lawrence,” Miss Henrietta Cavendish as “Lady Pennybroke,” MiFrank Bradley as “Montague Jordan” and several others. The season commences at the Municipal Theatre on Wednesday next, for positively one night orlv. The Company comes to Waipukurau in the zenith of its fame, having had a triumphal tour of the Dominion. In Wellington recently their season was an instantaneous success, critics describing the performance as par excellence. Patrons are advised to pool-. CW-- nJ Wood’s Music Store
