PENAL SERVITUDE FOR LIFE

ATTEMPT TO KILL POLICEMAN. LONDON, Feb. 20. There was a sensational scene at the Nottingham "Assizes when Edgar Smith was found guilty of the attempted murder of Police Constable Dainty, who overtook Smith, motoring, andVas shot by him. The Judge said: “You shot this unfortunate man three, times when he was doing his duty. There, is/only one penalty I can inflict, namely, penal servitude for life.” '. Smith reeled in the dock, / while there was a gasp in the Court. Presently, Smith recovered, and said: “Cannot you.have mercy, if not for me, for my wife. This is a terrible sentence.” “It is a terrible sentence,” remarked the Judge, “but you have done a terrible thing, and it is only by the mercy of God that you are not charged with murder.”
