TAKAPAU NOTES .. Mr. W. G. Morton presided at the annual meeting of subscribers to the Takapau Public Library. The report and balance-sheet for the year, each of a satisfactory nature, were read and received. The amount of annual subscribers was a little ahead of the previous year. The secretary, Mrs Hawkins, reported that the Government subsidy form had been completed and forwarded. The amount of the subsidy for last year was £l3. The following members of committee were elected: —Mrs Hawkins, Rev. A. E. Hunt, Messrs. W. G. Morton, J. Caughlcy, J. Maudsley, R. A. Pearson, N. M. Paulsen and R. McKay. - Grain crops are now threshing out well and 60 bushels to the acre from barley is not an uncommon yield. Very little oats are grown on the plains now, growers practically confining themselves to small lots for their own use. There is a considerable amount of influenza of..a more or less mild nature at present prevalent in the district. The Takapau Caledonian Society is to held its annual gathering on Wednesday, a lengthy and varied programme of athletic, dancing, piping, and horse events forming part of the day’s sport. Mr W. Cuthbertson is the secretary. Eat Lambs. Owing to the dry spell rape paddocks are suffering severely from the fly and farmers who have been depending on rape and turnips to" fatten off lambs are likely to be at a disadvantage. Caledonian Society. A meting of the Takapau Caledonian. Society directors was held last evening, Mr H. A. Speedy presiding, to make final arrangements for the sports day on Wednesday, February 23. There was a good attendance and with the interest that is being evinced and the support that is forthcoming, the society anticipates a record gathering this year. Prior to the commencement of the business of the meeting the chairman moved a vote of condolence to the relatives of the late Dr. O. J. Reid and the motion was carried in the customary manner. A large amount of detail business was put through in connection with leasing privileges, arrangements for concert and dance, and ground work. A very fine programme for the concert has been arranged, the following well-known Southern Hawke’s Bay performers being amongst the contributors: Mrs M. Mercer, Mrs W. Forsyth, Miss Iris Lawson, Messrs E. Collins, L. Kendal, T. Brennan, W. J. Hood and champion pipes and dancers. Pukeora Sanatorium. Wednesday was Sanatorium day for Takapau party of ladies taking with them the usual batch of comforts for the patients, spent the afternoon at Pukeora. The oragnisation and arrangements for the afternoon were in the hands of Mrs W. G. Morton.

A special meeting of the Waipawa Retailers’ Association was held on Tuesday evening,. presided over by Mr L. Pratlcy. The principal business was the question of holidays in the near future. In connection with the school excursion to-day (Friday) a motion of Messrs. Edwards and Harris that a holiday be observed was lost by four votes to three. It was also resolved not to close on March 4th, the occasion of the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York to Hastings and Napier.
