IMPORTANCE OF SWIMMING

PAHIATUA CLUB’S MOVE PAHIATUA, Feb 17 In- View of the appalling number of deaths by drowning in the Dominion the Pahiatua Swimming Club has decided to send a deputation to wait on the Prime Minister’ urging either that swimming be made complusory in schools or that the Government subsidise clubs employing instructors and thus doing the Government’s work. In its 16 years existence the Pahiatua Club has taught 700 children to swim without any Government, assistance and until it can now boast that, in proportion to the population, Pahiatua has more juvenile swimmers than any other town. The paltry sum of £2OO voted to the New Zealand Swimming Association is abundant evidence that legislators do not realise the deadly importance of

teaching children to swim. For these reasons the club has decided to make strong representations to the Government to render assistance in this direction.
