SLEPT IN A FURNACE.
Seeking a night’s shelter in a furnace belonging to the Midland Coal, Coke, and Iron Company, at Apedale, Staffordshire, a young fellow named Perry, from Gorton, Manchester, who was on tramp, narrowly escaped a terrible death. The furnace is used for the purpose of reducing very large pieces of iron, such as broken rollers, which are too big to be dealt with in the ordinary cupola oven. As it happened, the fire-bars had been taken out, and Perry was able to creep inside. Mounting a small dam, or wall, he reached the melt-ing-chamber proper, where he lay down to sleep. Next morning the workmen, on their arrival at six o’clock, commenced to put in the fire-bars, thus closing the exit. The furnace was then lighted. Suddenly the workers were startled by hearing terrific screams, followed by the cry, “O, Lord, save me.” At first the idea that the voice had issued from the oven w'as ridiculed but the cries were repeated. Immediately afterwards the charging door in the furnace opened, and the scorched and blackened figure of Perry leapt out. In order to get out of the melting chamber Perry had to get over the wall and jump through the scorching flame to the charging hole. Had he been there five minutes longer he would certainly have been burned to death. As it was, the poor fellow sustained some very serious burns.
