INCREASE IN THE PRICE OF IMPLEMENTS.
Inquiries instituted among various implement manufacturers in Christchurch confirm a report that has been current that an increase in the price of the principal lines of agricultural appliances made there is to be enforced.about the beginning of next month, when tne different makers’ catalogues are issued. The rise is not due to any concerted action on the part of the firms concerned, but is rather the outcome of a general feeling entertained by individual makers that something must be done to recoup them for the increased outlay demanded by the enhanced cost of raw material and the additions to their pay rolls imposed by recent awards of the Arbitration Court. Each firm appears to be acting independently of others in the matter, as the increase of prices to be instituted vary considerably. In different instances standard lines, such as ploughs, harrows, etc., are to be made to bear the chief burden, but over the whole range of articles selected for an increased selling-price, the rise will not average 5 per cent. Five pei’ cent has been added in some cases ; 24 per cent, in others.
