DEBATING SOCIETY.
A meeting of the Debating Society was held last evening, in St. Andrew’s Hall, Mr Westbrooke being in the chair.' It was announced that Mr Hopkins, Government Bee Expert, would deliver a lecture'mrFriday, 23rd October. On the motion of Mr Stoddart it was decided to have papers promised by members read on September 30, the Mock Banquet being postponed from that date, the Executive to decide the date when it is to be held.
A number of impromptu speeches were then, delivered. Mr Westbrooke spoke on the tactics of the suffragists; Mr Stoddart and Mr Cooke on proposed new railways ; Mr Cox and Mr Cooke on Gerpian naval and military preparations; Messrs Westbrooke, Stoddayt, Cooke and Miss Cooper on a water supply for Waipukurau, and Mr Stoddart and Mr Cooke on the question of whether the present cheap literature was good for the community. A vote of thanks to the chairman concluded the meeting.
