NAPIER NOTES.

(from our own correspondent). On Sunday afternoon crowds of people went down to the breakwater to see H.M.S. Encounter, when, despite the high sea which was running, motor launches were kept busily plying backwards and forwards, taking visitors out to the warship. A large crowd assembled in the Arcade on Saturday night to listen to the Napier Brass Band, which played a number of selections. The Encounter’s Good Templars gave an entertainment to a very fair audience at the Theatre Royal on Saturday night. They were welcomed’ by the Mayor, Mr Vigor Brown. The programme consisted of songs, duets, piccolo, flute, violin, mandolin, and pianoforte solos ; also club and axe swinging and sailor’s hornpipe. On Monday ntght a further contingent from the Encounter gave an entertainment in St. Augus-

tine’s Schoolroom, when the build" ing was crowded, and an excellent programme was given. On Tuesday night the officers of the warship were entertained by a number of Hawke’s Bay ladies at a ball.

The Harmonic Society opened their practices on Monday night, in preparation for a-concert to be held in November.
