FRUIT PESTS.

At a meeting of fruit importers held at Auckland to consider the Island fruit regulations, many strong speeches were made. Major Broun, entomologist, referred to the different species of flies, declaring that the Government regulations were not worth the paper they were printed on. He said that the only fly that would breed here was the Mediterranean species Experiments had proved that the Queensland fly would not breed here, and it was only the Queensland fly that was in the Islands. A resolution was carried strongly protesting against the regulations and urging their immediate withdrawal .

Drastic action is being taken by the pomological staff in dealing with San Jose scale, which has appeared _in various places throughout the Nelson province. The majority of the persons in whose orchards the blight has been discovered have received notice to spray their trees, and w’here this has not been carried out the inspectors are destroying the trees. Fruitgrowers strongly resent the wholesale slaughter that is taking place, and talk of petitioning the Government for compensation.
