IN THE DOMINION.

At the meeting at Dunedin of the National Insurance Company resolutions providing for enlarging the powers of the company were unanimously carried. As soon as the resolutions are confirmed the directors will open an accident branch. A slight collision occurred off Jackson’s Head on Thursday between the Penguin, from Nelson, and the Gertie, a coal boat from Westport. Both the boats were bound for Picton. The mishap occurred at 2.50 p.m. Neither ship sustained serious damage, but by the prompt action of Captain Stewart, of the Penguin, a more serious accident was averted.

At the inquest on Frederick Grantham, who was found dead on the Rangiwahia Block with a discharged shot gun lying alongside, a verdict was returned of suicide while temporarily insane. A letter left by deceased stated that he was liable to’five years’ imprisonment for saying things, about people, the names of whom are not mentioned', and the only way out was to commit suicide.

The body of a man stretched at full length on his back, with a bullet wound through his head, was discovered at the summit of Mount Eden, Auckland, on Thursday. The man was alive; lying straight with his hands by his side. Close to the left-hand was a revolver. Examination showed that the bullet had entered the mouth and- come out just above the right eye. In a pocket a letter was found indicating that the man’s name was Robert King, and from another letter found upon him, from a law firm, styled McCarthy and Edge, of Washington, U.S.A., he was evidently an American. With the exception of this letter nothing was found on the body that would solve his identification. The man was taken to the hospital, where he died the same night.
