The number of surprise parties speaks uolumes for the kindly feeling existing amongst us. The kitchen was quicky cleared and dancing was enjoyed to the strains of the violin playing of Mr A. H. McKay. A great bonfire- was started in front of the verandah, which had an inspiriting effect, and gave a welcome -glow to the surroundings. The ladies brought a sumptuous supply of cakes' add other good

thidgs with them, and they were done ample justice to. Miss Murphy gave a number of pianoferte selections ; Mrs Lowther recited “ The Tidy Housewife ” and sang “ The Lakes of Killarney,” and the Rowen Tree.,’ Mr Falconer gave the pathetic song “ I am wearin’ awa’, Jean,’, and Mr A. H. McKay sang “ True Blue ” and “Molly Riley.” A very pleasan evening was spent and the gathering dispersed after singing “ Auld Lang Snne.” — Th® lambing season in this district is about at its height. The early lambs came through the wet weathet very w’ell. in fact one settler says that he had fewer losses in his early lambs than he is having among those just coming
