BACHELORS’ BALL.
A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING The ball given last night by the bachelors of Waipukurau was an unqualified success, both in regard of the attendance and the manner in which the function was carried out. The Town Hall was a very animated scene from 8 o’clock onwards, and the dances proved exceedingly pretty spectacles, the beautiful dresses of the ladies as they floated through the hall blending together remarkably well and forming a splendid picture. White and cream silk were the predominating dress materials, pale blue silk being next in favour. There must have been nearly 150 couples in the room, and there was a good sprinkling of visitors from the surrounding districts, Waipawa, Hatuma and Wanstead being especially well represented.
Much trouble had been gone to in the decoration of the hall and the general effect was very pleasing. The gallery over the entrance presented a miniature forest of shrubs, in which cabbage-trees, palms, and ferns played a prominent part. The sides of the hall were tastefully clothed in ever-
greens. The stage had been comfortably furnished for the convenience of non-dancers, and formed a splendid coign of vantage from which to view the throng of dancers.
Great praise is due to the mittee of management for the splendid arrangements which had been made, everything going off without a hitch. Particular care had been taken with the preparation of the floor, which was in splendid order. Miss Moroney was the pianiste, and Mr Tankard, cornettist, and many complimentary remarks were made regarding the music. Extras were played by Misses Hannon, O’Reilly, " Bird, and Mitten and Mr Arthur. The catering was done by Mr Shaw, and the management of the supper room was in the hands of Mesdames Lomas and Brooker. The tables were laden with a very generous supply of delicacies, and were beautifully decorated. There was a plenitude of cooling drinks, and during the latter part of the ball hot beef tea was served. The M.C.’s, Messrs J. Gain, D. J. Graham, P. S. Carroll, and Beard, were untiring in their efforts on behalf of the dancers, and Mr G. Lomas, junr., was an indefatigable secretary.
