The Press. Published Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Thursday, August 6, 1908. THE PROPOSED BRIDGES.

The matter of the bridges proposed to be built over the Tukituki and Makaretu rivers has made very slow progress so far, but we hope the local bodies concerned will not allow the question to be hung upmuch longer and so lose the opportunity of getting a vote granted during the present session of Parliament. If they do there is a likelihood, we fear, of great delay in getting the work under way. Mr C. Hall, M.P. has shown great anxiety to push the thing along, and has suggested that the bodies concerned should send himgan estimate of the cost qf the work and an application for the grant. Some of the members of the Waipukurau County Council, who no doubt are voicing the fears of their constituents, are very anxious lest any action they should take would render the county liable for a large share of the. cost of

erection and upkeep of the structures. Inaction on the part of the Council would jnot, however, save the county fiom being charged with its share of the expenditure if a commission were set up to apportion the cost between the local bodies interested. Councillors are, of course, doing right in seeking to conserve the interests of the ratepayers, but we hope they will not remain inactive as well as cautious. It is all very well for the Council to pass motions saying it will not stand in the way of bridges being built, button passage of such motions is calculated to weaken Mr Hall’s bands instead of trengthening them. The Town Board at it meeting on Monday night decided to approach the Waipawa County Council and request it .to take steps,' under section 118 of the Public Works Act, to build the ]'j Some at least of the Waipawa Councillors are sure to Im in favour of the scheme, because the ridings they represent would be greatly benefited by it, and we hope they will give tbei assistance in furthering it.'
