TRAGEDY IN COURT.
A tragic scene was enacted at a court-martial in Danzig. Some months ago a volunteer of the 30th Artillery Regiment named Schwarz became engaged to the daughter of a wealthy merchant. Her parents would not hear of the match, however, and after doing everything they could to dissuade the girl they offered her £lOO if she gave up her lover. The girl agreed, but directly she obtained the money she hastened to her sweetheart, and persuaded him to go with her to London, where they were duly married in a registry office. Bnt the young man was moved to repentance for his desertions, and the two returned to Danzig, where Schwarz gave himself up to the authorities. He was tried, and owing to the circumstances the judges let him off with a light sentence of three months’ imprisonment. The young wife was in court, and when she heard that her husband would have to go to prison she swallowed the contents of a small phial of poison, and fell dead on the floor.
