FOOTBALL.
/ o BRITISHERS DEFEATED BY AUCKLAND. The British team met with a decisive <defeat at Auckland on Saturday, the home team winning by 11 points to nil. The visitors’ team was weakened by the absence of some of their best players owing to injuries. A few minutes after the kick-off Bates secured the ball in midfield and started for the visitors’ line. Dyke stopped him a few yards out, but the ball rolled over the line, and Hayward pounced on it. Kierman’s kick was a failure. For the rest of the first spell the Britishers had rather the best of the play. The first half of the second spell was very even, but the visitors began then to fall off. Gillett, from a line-out, passed smartly to Herring, who ran in and scored. Francis’s kick was fruitless. Murray got the ball at the Britishers’ twenty-five, and although Dyke tackled him, he wrenched away and got over. Magee kicked an easy goal. There was no further score, although the home team lost some chances through over anxiety.
