HEAVY RAINFALL.
DAMAGE IN THE SOUTH. Considerable damage is reported to have been caused in different paits of the South Island by the exceedingly heavy rainfall, and in some places railway traffic has been stopped by wash-outs and snowstorms. The rainfall in Dunedin is said to have been the heaviest for some years, but in the city very little damage appears to have been done. There is a heavy flood on the Taieri Plains, the water in some parts being 15ft deep. Several families were isolated, and one family had to take lefuge in a hay loft. Heavy losses of stock are reported. At Naseby and St. Bathans there is three to four feet of snow on the ground. In Canterbury the damage does not appear to have been as- great as in Otage, but still it is considerable, and shipping has been greatly delayed. Considerable damage has been caused to telegraph lines but the repairing staff is using every expedition in restoring communication. The effects of the storm were 'felt pretty generally through the North Island also, and shipmasters report that the seas along the coast are very heavy.-
