* Woodville v. Waipukurau. The above match took place in Mr Bailey’s paddock (kindly lent for the occasion) on Weduesday afternoon. There was a fair attendance. The weather cleared up for the occasion, but the heavy rains of the past few days had left behind some very soft places and at times the play was more appreciated by the onlookers than the players. The teams were: —Woodville Burlaee, Monteith, Grenlington, Lord, Walker, Palmer Crawford, Pritchard, G. Palmer, Giles, Hollier; Dunford, Harding, Abbott, and Hambling. WaipuJcurau: H. Simpson, G. Pirie, J. Matthews, Walker, T.. Sharpin, B. Erfdieher (captain), A. Henderson, D. Mackay, G. Lomas, R. Shultz, J. Bailey, R. White, Cleary, Ryan, and Douglas., . - Woodville were considerably lighter than their opponents, and from the start had the best of , the game. Tha softness of the ground gave them an advantage, but the slippy nature of the ball spoiled some nice ..passing. : During the first spell, with. the sun in their eyes, Woodville had the , s local men on the defensive,- and compelled them to force on . four occasions, being withimau ace several'tiinea. After.'-t&ou#2o minutes play H. Walker got over the line-fcjnngside the posts, and Monteith succeeded in adding the major score—s—o. No.further score took .place during tlais spell. On opening the second spell - play was . fairly even,- ; and.. Waipukurau held J their own- .< Jjdst .oil. the call of aftcc.--s * good-. f< r.ward rush, Raimer got over .-the line at an easy angle, out Monteith failed tp convert. Score Woodville, 8 ; . Waipukurau 0.
For the visitors, Lord on the wing played a good game, taking thing very cooly, and making sure of his kicks. Palmer, captain oi the visitors, played a hard game and kept his men well together, while Burlace as full back played a good sure game. In the Waipukurau division Kelleher did a .power of work, and was well assisted by J. Bailey. Ryan made some .good rushes and had rather bad luck on two or three occasions. Walker made the most of his opportunities. which were not many. Simpson filled his position to advantage, being kept pretty busy at times. D. Mackay also put in some good work. Mr W. Gooseman was a good referee, and did not unnecessarily use the whistle, a great fault with most referees.
