School Committee.
Monthly meeting of the Waipukurau School Committee was held in the school last night, there being present —Messrs Gow (chairman), P. Barrie, Seymour, Anuand, and F. Bailey. The chairman said Miss Coalbrooke, late assistant mistress, had written defending herself a-aiii.-t charges. Illness appeared to be the cause of her absences, lie (t he chairman) had forwarded her letter and the headmaster’s to the board. In his report Mr Cooke stated that the roll number is now 173 ; five new pupils had joined this week. The attendance was good, considering the weather. The new assistant, Mr Biorance, commenced duty on Tuesday. Three cases of truancy were reported. The visiting committee reported a few necessary repairs required. — Chairman to attend. Four small accounts were passed for payment. A Hastings resident wrote urging the committee to vote for Sir Vv m. Russell and Messrs Maddison and Whittington at the Education Bd. election.
Rev J. Pattison, on behalf of self and Rev Martin, wrote asking permission to give lessons from the Scriptures for half an hour on school days, at a time that would not interfere with the ordinary lessons—say from 9 to 9.30 a.m. — Mr Barrie moved, That the request be acceded to. He understood that according to Act the committee could not withhold permission. Mr Gow seconded. —Messrs Seymour, Bailey, and Annand, while not absolutely opposed, would like the matter postponed for a month in order to fully consider the request;. A motion to" this effect, moved by Mr Seymour, was carried by 3 to 2.
