The Westland Seat.

[By Telegraph.] Hokitika, July 5. Mr Michel is visiting the north of the electorate. He has had gooc. receptions, and very frit ndly bearings. Locally he ."lands wed, and his supporters expr ss g.eat. confidence m the result. On the other

hand, Mr Seddon’s friends are equally confident, and aver that the young man will win by a handsome majority. Mr Seddoii hek two very successful meetings in the Waimea d strict, where his father first started work on the Coast. Both Staffordshire and Goldsboro’ were very enthusiastic, and the show of hands in favour of a confidence motion was very large. He is now visiting the farming district of Kokatahi, where his opponent is said to hold the bulk of the votes. At Koiterangi he had a good meeting. He speaks here before what will doubtless be a record political gathering. The largest hall has been engaged, but it is doubtful if it will prove adequate. His success at the poll in the town will depend a good deal on tne personal impression he makes. Great interest in the election is being taken throughout the whole district.

Tins Day. Mr T. Seddon and Mr 11. Michel were the only candidates nominated for Westland. Another nomination was received by the returning officer, but without the requsite deposit, and was therefore refused. Iwr Seddon addressed a large crowd in the theatre last night, there being over lOOl) present. The candidate received a great ovation. Westport, J uly 5. Mr R. McKenzie, M.H.R., does not now intend to go to South Westland in Mr Seddon’s interest as a candidate for Parliament. Westport people believe that Mr Seddon has an easy battle.
