ifif —*•— After passing supplies and dealing with some formal business, the House adjourned on Saturday until about the middle of August, by which time it is expected Sir Joseph Ward will have returned to the colony. Premiers may come and Premiers may go, but the sitting of the House opened with the customary petitions and notices of motion—just as in the olden days; like hunger and thirst, the trivialities of Parliament are not long repressed by great calamities- Early in the sitting the Premier made a statement of his personal position with frankness, and made it clear that he never had any desire to supplant Sir Joseph Ward. One of the Wellington journals says: — Mr Hall-J ones lacks the force and vigour of his late chief, who seemed to fill the House with his presence when he aro>e But Mr Hall-Jones was cool and very collected, and in quite admirable form for his first essay as a controversial Premier. He gibed at Mr Massey’s boast about his embryonic Ministers, and rather surprised members by his confident promise to have everything ready by next session. The Legislative Council had little to do save negotiate the Address-in-Reply debate, and, like the House of Lords, when it has nothing in particular ahead of it, it did it very well.
