As to the play of the respective teams, there was not much to choose between them, except that Waipawa displayed superior passing. A good number of spectators watched the match. F. Gflasgow captained the winners, and Kelleher Waipuk; Mr O’ Reilly was referee, and Messrs Chambers and Rathbone line umpires. NOTES
All the Waipuk men grafted veryhard on Wednesday, and did their levefbest for victory, but the fates were agin ’em. From the on-l lookers’ point of view, perhaps tha| individual play mostly admired was I that of Kelleher, Bailey, Sharpin, Glasgow, A. Ferguson, and Collett. The indiscretion of appointing local referees has been fully exemplified of late, ho matter how impartial a man may be, or try to be, people will talk—friends of the losing side make unpleasant remarks. Why cannot a referee from another province be obtained for an important match ? The services of such could be had for the asking. Then there would be no room for talk about bias and no heartburnings. At a match quite recently a. cluster of men decided that the result was a foregone conclusion when they heard the name of the referee; and this before the
game commenced. Despite the fact of a Referees’ Association having recently been formed in this district, there was difficulty in getting a referee for Wednesday’s Waipawa match. Mr Norris, who had been appointed, was out of the district, and Waipawa objected to Mr Gooseman; so it was eventually agreed that Mr O’Reilly act. That gentleman I nearly succeeded in satisfying the views of all interested. Sometimes when a team wins, the winners think the referee satisfactory ; but when the team loses under the same man, he must be shunted at all costs. A very strong combination has been picked to play Napier tomorrow, and if those chosen can take part, the country men should emerge from the fray with smiles that won’t wear off for a time. The Waipukurau club has eight repre-
sentatives, and the selectors appear to have made the best choice possible on past play. Waipawa should soon be feeling pretty proud of its achievements in the football field. Before its fell swoop there tumbled all of a heap the Waipuk schoolboys, our picked seniors, and Onga Onga juniors and thirds. , The Canterbury-Hawke’s Bay representative match will be played at Napier on Wednesday, August 15th. The Wellington-H.B. rep match is fixed to take place at Napier on September 11th. Matches in this district have so far been played in favourable weather, without rain. A one-legged football player was fined recently at Home for playing football in the street. The police said: “He takes some catching when he gets away with the ball.
