TE LATE PREMIER.
—# — The Funeral. The Priemier’s funeral, which took place at Wellington yesterday, was a stately pageant. Besides the many who took part in the procession, thousands of persons lined the streets. One noteworthy feature was the demonstration made by the Maoris. The weather was perfect. The Post estimates that there were thirty thousand in the procession. The burial service was impressively conducted by Bishop Wallis, other cletgymen assisting. Day and night for ten days two members of the family had alternately kept vigil beside the body. A brief Masonic service was gone through. Bro. Malcolm Niccol, Grand Secretary, conducted the service.
In various parts of the colony special services were held. Locally all business places were closed and work suspended. Out of respect to the late Premier, all business was suspended yesttrday at Waipawa. The hotels closed from Ito 5 p.m. The Waipawa Rifles and the Public School Cadets, headed by the Waipawa Brass band, marched to opposite the Post-office, where, in the presence of a large gathering of people, the Dead March was played. Volleys were fired by the volunteers, and the buglers sounded the Last Post.
