Auckland sends a football team to Sydney early next month. ’ The Canterbury rep. team will play Wanganui on August Bth, Auckland 11th, Wairarapa 15th, and Wellington 19tb. Other exciting events have quite overshadowed football for the past week or more, but next week should see afresh rexival of inteiest in the popular game. . At a meeting of the Sub-uion, the secretary reported that the owners of the football grounds bad handed over the control of same to the sub-union. Ormondville intimated that they were affiliated to the Bush union. It was decided to send a team to Napier on Saturday, 30th inst., if a match c ould be arranged ; team to be picked after the senior fixture on Wednesday. The newly-formed referees’ association was officially acknowledged, the association to be asked to appoint referees for the remaining fixtures. Messrs Lomas and G. Ellison represented Waipukurau at the meeting.
Mixed weather again prevailed for the third day of the Manawatu ■Winter Show. A special feature yesterday morning was the gathering of about 400 children from 20 country schools. The attendance at the show so far has been much tetter than was expected. The was closed for half an hour this afternoon, out of respect to ’ the late Premier. The executive have decided to keep open an extra day, that is, till Saturday night. According to the statement of the passenger agent of the Milwaukee Railway, 150,000 Amenwill remove to Western Canada during he coming summer. The cherry, the peach, and the ■plum were first grown in Persia. Gibraltar is the strongest fortress in the world. , . . , London’s population increases at tho rate of 105,000 a year.
