NOTES. Little or nothing was known of > the game of football in Australia Wprior to the year 1829, when, on July 25th, appeared in the Sydney Monitor the following brief reference to the game then being played: —“The privates in the barracks are in the habit of amusing themselves with the game of football. The ball may be daily descried remounting higher or lower, /according to the skill of the bold military kickers thereof. It is a healthy amusement, and much played in Leicestershire.” This paragraph is rendered interesting, particularly at this season of the year, from the fact that it constitutes the earliest newspaper “ report ” of the game in Australia. No mention, it will be noticed, is made of the class of the game then in vogue.

The palace of the King of Siam is surrounded by high white walls which are a mile in circumference. ■Within them are contained temples, public offices, seraglios, stables for the sacred elephants, accommodation for 1000 troops, cavalry, artillery, war elephants, an arsenal, and a theatre.
