TOWN BOARD

, LIGHTING. A special meeting of the Waipukurau Town Board was held last night to consider street lighting proposals. 'The following’members were present —Commissioners W. A. Chambers [chairman], Staines, Williams, J.J. Bailey, Mitchell, and Seymour. A draft proposal was read suggesting the erection of six Kitson lamps in the main street. The chairman said it was proposed to borrow £2OO in four debentures of £5O each, and as security a special recurring rate of 3-16ths of a penny; to be extinguished in 20 years ; rate would bring in £24 3s per annum. The chairman said the rate would have to be struck, but it might not be necessary to collect it. The board’s ordinary income was approximately £4OO, and one-eighth of this amount would be sufficient revenue for the lighting proposed. This was thought to be the best proposal to make under the present circumstances. As the town grew more lamps could be added, or there might be companies offering to instal a comprehensive lighting system and paying for the privilege ; then the lamps could be sold. Com’r Mitchell thought it would be well if they could provide lighting out of ordinary revenue. After discussion, Com’r Staines moved, that steps be taken to call the necessary meeting of ratepayers to consider the question of erecting six lamps. — Seconded by Com’r Seymour. Com’r Williams would oppose six lamps. He moved an amendment in favour of nine lamps and a loan of £3oo.—The chairman seconded the amendment pro forma. On being put, the amendment was lost [only Com’r Williams voting for it], and the motion carried [Com’r Williams voting against it]. On .the question of the number of lamps, there was a rather lengthy though friendly controversy between Com’r Williams and the chairman, the former maintaining that others than the main street should be lighted. The chairman thought they should try ami make the town attractive. The lighting of the main street would benetit the outside residents as much as it would anyone else. More lamps could be added gradually.
