Society of Railway Servants.

A SUCCESSFUL MEETING-. At fhe Oddfellows’ Hall on Saturday evening last, about 50 members of the Railway Department were present at the inauguration ceremony of the Wai puk ura u branch ofthe Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants. The following were elected officers of the branch •—Chairman, Mr M. C. Stewart : vice-chairman, J. Lindsay; secretary, G. H. Cooper ; treasurer, A. L. Petherick ; trustees, Messrs B. Grosvenor, R. A. Hopkirk, and M. Coyle ; committee Messrs Broooks, Parker, Benby, Finlayson, Dobson, Whyman, Henderson, andOusey. Mr W. J. Edwards, General Secretary, was also present, and in addressing the assemblage pointed out the aims and benefits to be gained by every railway man joining the Society, and in conclusion wished the new branch every success. Delegates wore present from Dannevirke branch, and in congratulatory speeches wished them every prosperity. Apoligies for inability to attend were read from Woodville, Napier, and Palmerston N. branches. Twenty-two persons gave in their names as new members, and with transfers from other branches it is expected the membership will reach 70. At the conclusion of business a smoke concert was held, at which the following contributed items : Messrs Brooks, Henderson, Cooper Brunton. Groome, Cleghoin, Hitchins, J Bailey, and Brennan. The following toasts were drunk with musical honours : —Amalgamated Society, proposed by Mi’ Stewart, responded to by Mr Edwards ; Kindred societies, proposed by Mr G. Cooper, responded to by Messrs F. Bailey and A. Whyman ; Officers of Railway Department, by Mr D. Finlayson, and responded to by Mr R. Hyslop. The gathering broke up at midnight, after an enjoyable evening, with the singing of Auld Lang Syne.
