ROAD BOARD.

# ORDINARY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Waipukurau Road Board was held at the Town Hall on Tuesday. Present—Messrs Gow, Williamson, Wall, Williams, and Mackay; also the clerk (Mr J. H. Nelson), CHAIRMAN. Mr Williamson moved that Mr Gow be re-elected chairman. He said the retiring members had paid high tribute to Mr Gow’s services.—Mr Williams seconded. Mr Gow said he had hoped there would be a change, but as members seemed to desire that he should continue in the office, he would consent for a while longer. Motion carried. NIPPED IN THE BUD. In regard to the proposed new Turere road, Mr E. A. Elliott wrote claiming certain compensation for laud proposed to be taken. He would require gates, culverts, fences etc., erected and £l5O. The chairman said that settled the matter —they would have to drop the proposal. Mr Williamson agreed, and said they would have to spend a little in patching up the old road. In reply to Mr Wall, the chairman said the new road would cost about £BOO, and settlers had promised £2OO towards it. Resolved (Williamson —Mackay) that the matter be left over for the present. Mr Wall said he would like to look into the whole question, EXTRA PAYMENT. The Waipukurau Town Board's additional claim for £2 13s 3d for metalling cemetery road was agreed to. The Road Board had previously voted £l5. Mr Williams explained the position. Mr Williamson thought that if claims like that cropped up at every meeting, the board might bg involved in great liability. A MISSING FIVER. The clerk of the Town Board wrote asking what had become of a £5 cheque, also that data relating to sanitary matters, plan of the drain through Jenson’s property r aud plan of deviation of property opposite Lomas’ business premises be handed over. The clerk said the cheque, issued, two years ago, had been lost and payment stopped. The chairman (who cheque it was) was deputed to attend to theu latter. As regards the other items, the Town Board’s request was agreed to. CLAIM FOR ACCIDENT. Mr A. J. Smith’s solicitor wrote claiming £5 3s iOd, as compensation for injuries received some time ago in connection with a horse accident. It appeared that the original claim was for £7 10s, but the accident insurance company had paid £2 odd. Members thought they were Dot liable. Mr Williams said the contractor had been out of pocket through the mishap, and he thought the claim should be paid. Mr Williamson — If the mans warned to appeal to the generosity of the board, he should not have employed a lawyer. Mr Williams moved that MrSmith be given the sum of £5. The chairman and Mr Wall z while sympathising, doubted if they could vote the money. Eventually, it was resolved (Williamson — Williams),that Mr Smith be paid £2 10s in lieu of all claims against the board. Air Wall voted against the motion. REPORTS. The overseer’s report was read and adopted., It dealt with various road works. The chairman also reported on several matters that had engaged his attention. The Ngahape road is in a bad state, and required particular attention. The plow and scoop would be put on the racecourse road. Four hundred yards of metal had been put on the Maungatarata road, and it was advisable to put the grader on theMount Herbert road. The board resolved to call tenders for metalling 40 chains of Cemetery road. FINANCE. The pay-sheet amounted to £64 4s. The chairman made a statement in regard to the finances. There was at present a debit of £65 Bs. An |d rate would bring in and the subsidy would bring the amount up to £5lO. RATE. On the motion of Mr Williamson seconded by Air Mackay, the |d general rate struck at last meeting was confirmed. It was resolved to ask County Council for permission to collect county rate in road board district, and spend same in district; hospital and C.A. proportion to be refunded. . The board sat for an hour and a half.
