READING ROOM.

[To the Editor.] Sir,—I was pleased to see your “local” in last Tuesday’s issue calling attention to the need of a public reading-room in our town. It is a matter that some of us have been considering for years, and, though we have not succeeded, so far, in providing a public readingroom, I think we may say we have done something towards it. We have secured a site, and have put up the present Library, having built it in such a way that when further funds are available there may be a reading room and quarters for a caretaker. We have gone as far as we can at present, and are in want of some furniture for the present building. Our last aopeal for assistance has not met with any general response ; still we are in hopes of going on, and perhaps your articles may serve as a reminder of the need for a reading room. I may say that some years ago we endeavoured to make the library a reading room on the Saturday evenings. We provided chess and draughts and the papers, but the project met with very little support, owing probably to the limited time it was open. We will have the reading room open all day as soon as the necessary funds are forthcoming.—I am, etc., Chas. J. Cooke.
