TOWN BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. The Board met last night. Present —Commissioners W. A. Chambers (chairman), C. \V. Mitchell, J. J. Bailey, C. Vv. Seymour, J. and J. Maims. Mr F. Crore was unavoidably absent. Minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. COHRESrONDENCE. Letter from Messrs Beachem and Wynn, asking that twelve chains of road to their property be metalled. —The chairman said they would have to husband their money, as after that night’s pay-sheet had been passed, the board would have overdrawn to the extent of £l3, and there would be no revenue until June. Still he thought this road might be done, and moved that a light coat of metal be put upon it, —Seconded by Com’r Mitchell.— Com’r Williams thought the amount of metal should be specified, and moved an amendment that ten yards to the chain be used ; then the road would be good for all time.—No seconder ; motion carriedJfrom Railway Department, offeracres (present site) for nightsoil'deposit, at rent ot 1/- year; board to pay £1 for plan sent.- — Resolved (Staines —Mitchell), that offer be accepted. From same, re surface waterfrom railway cattle pits. —Chairman said Better concerned the county council. From Health Department, re burial of nightsoil at hospital. "From Messrs Sterry, Jull, McVay and Barrie (through the district health officer), asking that drains at their premises be made or repaired. —Resolved (Williams —Bailey), that overseer do work at owners expense. From T. Nicholson, asking for a
culvert. —Granted. BEPOBT. The overseer’s monthly report was read and adopted. It dealt with work done during the month and work in hand. STBAY STOCK. The chairman explained that as the Board has not yet adopted bylaw’s, thev could not prosecute own<rs of stock straying on streets, but the police had power and would do so if the Board passed a definite resolution to that effect. Com’r Seymour moved, That the police be requested to prosecute all perrons allowing stock to trespass on roads in the town district.— Com’r Staines seconded. —Carried. PAY sheet. Maintenance —G. The valuation roll not having come to hand in time, the rate of 2d struck at a previous meeting a as varied. On the motion of Com’r Staines, seconded by Com’r Seymour, it was resolved that a general rate of 2d in the £ for the year ending 31st March next will be struck on 4th June and payable on 2nd July. Estimates for year — £376 ss. Statement to be advertised in usual manner. lighting. The resolution passed by Thursday’s meeting- —forwarded by Mr Barrie as chairman —was read. The chairman made an explanation as to why the ratepayers’ meeting had been postponed. r lhe Board had no intention of abandoning the project, and he did not think the error made a very serious one. He quoted a similar instance had occurred in Wellington, and five lawyers had differed on the question. He did not quite agree with the recommendation as to position of lamps, and thought there should be at least four in the main street. Com’r Williams said that lamps were more required at dark spots in the back streets. The business premises lighted the town to a large extent-

of a £4OO loan under the Loans to Local Bodies Act. The term will be for twenty years, and it was estimated that a special rate of one penny" and one-tenth would be required to provide interest and sinkThe total cost of the u3Uep of twelve Kitson lamps, including everything, was estimated at £B5 per year. *! The Public Trust Office offered to lend the money at 5 per cent. GEN REAL. It was resolved that the Board’s "office be shifted to the Oddfellows’ <Kesolved (Williams — Staines) that contract* with Mr Jensen for use of pound at 3/- per week be ■“continued until further notice- It stated the pound had paid expense of running.
