—#— NEW WAIPUKURAU YARDS. The sale yards at Waipuknrau are now completed- They cover several acres of ground, and are said to be the largest and most up-to-date in the North Island. The convenience of buyers and venders has been studied in everv respect, and stock can be exhibited to the utmost advantage. Toe yards are capable of accommodating at once thirty thousand sheep and about two thousand head of cattle. The greater portion of the yarding is new, the contract having been carried out by Air J. Winlove’s staff, and it is needless to say the work has been vx ell done, Mr Winlove having a high reputation in this department. Strength is a feature, huge totara posts from the Totara Co., Oringi, being used in the construction of the cattle pens. The ironwork, of which a large quantity has been used, was made at Mr W. H. Booth’s local workshops; while the paving of the yards was entrusted to Mr R. Craze. In the centre of the cattle pens is a large covered-in rostrum, capable of seating several hundred persons, and there are conveniences for the auctioneers, their clerks, etc. The cattle are driven into an enclosure in the centre and held there for inspection until disposed of; then these are released, and another lot takes their place, and so on. Be the weather hot or wet, patrons are protected overhead—a convenience that is sure to be much appreciated. Each of the six auction firms operating at these yards has an office under one roof, a sign at the door denoting each firm’s room. The rooms are fitted with table, seats, and locker (to hold ‘a wee drappie,’ it appears). Most of the monetary transactions are done in these offices. The erection of these, yards and the holding of regular stock sales therein are undoubtedly a great benefit to Waipukurau.
There was a large entry of stock at the local yards on Wednesday, and settlers attended in good number. Most of the pens were disposed of, prices leaching previous sale’s rates.
