THE STOPPING OF A TRAIN.
— o — Aftek a mouth’s further trial, for the purpose of taking correct bearings, the Acting-Minister for Railways (the Hon A. Pitt) has decided to discontinue the midday Waipukurautrain asfrom to-day. Whether this train was a public convenience or not, it is an open secret that it was being run at a loss, and the department does not appreciate business under such a condition. Mr Fraser, M.H.R., who has been energetic in urging that the extra train be not discontinued, on Saturday received the following letter from the Acting-Minister for. Railways : —“ With reference to your representation urging continuance of the additional train between Waipukurau and Napier after the 30th instant, 1 have the honour to inform you that in compliance with your request an extension during the month of April has been approved. Very careful watch has, however, been kept on the traffic during the running of these trains, but it is found that the expenditure involved is altogether out of proportion to either the existing or the prospective traffic, and, in these circumstances, I regret that, on giving the matter every consideration, 1 cannot see my way to continue the services in'ques.tion after the 30th instant.”
