TOWN BOARD.
—o—- — MEETING. The Waipukurau Town Board met last night. Present—Commissioners Chambers (chairman), F. Gore, J. Staines, Williams, Mitchell, J. J. Bailey, and Seymour. Mr Fox, overseer, was also presdnt. CORRESPONDENCE. Letter read from Waipukurau Boad Board granting £l5 towards cost of metalling cemetery road.— Received. From W. I. Limbrick, promising to fence in section on main street. —Received. From Board’s solicitor, forwarding cheque for £75, as per agreement with Road Board. —Received. From Dr De Lisle, stating that he would visit Waipukurau and enquire into the question of nightsoil disposal. From Mr Hayes, re same matter ; believed that a destructor would be erected before long.—The nightsoil question brought up the matter of bye-laws. The chairman said the present agreement with the contractor had never been properly signed nor made, and was absolutely worthless —in fact a fresh agreement was necessary A new contract would be desirable so soqn as the Board formed byelaws.—Other members spoke to the same effect, and it was resolved (Staines —Mitchell) that the clerk write to different local bodies asking for copies of bye-laws, as a. guide to framing bye-laws for this board. From C. Hall, M.H.R, stating that he would wait upon the Post-master-General re telephone and urge that the request, be granted. —The chairman explained what?>he had done in the matter.—Action approved. From same, that he had interviewed the General Manager of Railways, and Acting-Minister, in reference to train service; the Minister had promised to run trains for another month in order to allow time for fullest enquiry.— Received. From Nelson Bros., that they would be offering land for sale in November, and suggesting that the Board then make request for site for reservoir.—Agreed to (Seymour —Gore). From Mr Gaisford, that he could not let Board have a site for office. —Received. From Railway engineer, giving board authority to impound stock off Tukituki river reserve, east of railway bridge. — Resolved (Mitchell—Staines), that overseer be instructed to impound stock from, land as per plan forwarded. From Beecham and Wynn, asking that nine chains of road leading to their property be metalled. —Mr Williams moved that the work be done. No seconder.—Motion moved by Com’r Gore, seconded by Com’r Bailey, that, the matter be deferred until the next meeting.— Carried.
From H. Brooker, that culvert be erected leading into his property. Com’r Williams moved that the work be done. —The'chairman said this was a policy matter; no doubt there would be many similar requests if this were granted. Mr Williams thought all similar requests should be granted, as people had as much right to have culverts as others had to have footpaths. Chairman agreed. Motion carried that the work be done. STBAY STOCK. It was resolved that persons allowing stock to stray about the streets be prosecuted.—The chairman remarked that there was a satisfactory diminition in the matter of stock straying since the advertisement appeared. METAL. The tender of W. Hall (2/5| per yard) was accepted for supplying 250 yards riverbed metal. FINANCE. The following accounts were passed for payment: —Fox, wages, £l2 3s; Phillips, wages, £4 16s; Fee, wages, £5 Is; Napier Gas Co, tar, £9 17s 8d ; Houseman, carting, £lO 3s 3d; E. Gilbertson, plan of town, £3 3s; Bank N.Z., stationery, £1 15s; Government Printer, Acts, £1 18s 9d; Annand, stationery, £4 Os 6d; Press, advertising, £1 6s. —The chairman took exception to the time charged for carting sand for footpath (3 days 2| hours), but on the foreman explaining that sand had to be sought in patches, the account was passed. —Com’r Williams said many ratepayers would like the items of payments published.—The chairman said the press was quite at liberty to do so if it wished. The Chairman took occasion to congratulate the Board on its satisfactory financial position. On the 31 st March they had a balance in the bank of £IOB. The receipts up to 31st ult. were £lB3 6s; total assets amounted to £215 ; liabilities nil. The balance sheet had been prepared and when audited would be formally presented to the board. The total income for the full year was estimated at £555. BATE. Com’r Seymour moved, That the Board give notice of its intention to strike a general rate of 2d in the pound over the town district area,
for the year ending 31st March 1907. The motion was seconded by Com’r Gore, and carried. COUNTY RATE. The chairman moved, That the county council be requested to make a special order vesting county roads which passed through the Waipukurau Town District in the Waipukurau Town Board, and that the council empower this board to collect county rate for the district on condition that this board refunds to the county its proportion of the hospital and charitable aid levy. Seconded by Com’r Mitchell and carried. foreman’s report. The overseer reported on various works done during the month. Tarring will be complei ed when weather permits. Had connected Mr Jull’s premises with sewerage drain. The balance of work authorised at previous meeting will be gone on with during this month
