Racing
WAIPAWA RACES. Fine weather prevailed for the Waipawa races, and, consequently, the attendance was good. A noticeable feature was the large attendance of ladies, and next in importance to their presence were the splendid costumes worn by a large proportion. The racing was good throughout, but unfortunately in a few instances the fields were small owing to the wholesale scratchings, only two facing the starter for the Waipawa Handicap, three in the Hail way Handicap, and three in the ’Homeward Hack; the other five events, were better represented. The sum of £3197 went through the totalisator. The secretary and assistants had arrangements in firstclass order, the convenience of patrons being studied to the fullest. The Waipawa Band performed on the lawn, and altogether the day was most enjoyable. Cricket The Melbourne Cricket Club team beat South Canterbury by 9 wickets. ~
