—o-o — GENERAL. The Order of Foresters are providing a million dollars to form a settlement in north-west Canada, composed of persons selected by the Salvation Army. A fire, which occurred at a depth of 700 ft, led to a terrific explosion in a mine at Courrieres, in the north of France, on Saturday morning. Seventeen hundred and ninety-five miners were buried. Four hundred were rescued. Disorder is still general in Russia. The subpoena calling upon Mr Rockefeller to testify at the AntiTrust Commission has been abandoned, the Oil Trust officials having arranged to give evidence. Serious floods have occurred in Queensland, and a large part of the country is under water. The Times congratulates King Alfonso of Spain and Princess Ena of Battenberg, who are about to be married. Mi’ Keir-Hardie has obtained the adhesion of the bulk of the Labour members, many Nationalists, and others, to an agreement to abstain from alcohol while the British Parliament is sitting. Arnst, the New Zealand cyclist, has qualified for the final, and Dan Plunkett (formerly of Wellington) for a special semi-final, in the Sydney Thousand.
