TOWN BOARD.

—o MONTHLY MEETING. At Monday night’s meeting of the Board the following business, in addition to that published in Tuesday’s issue, was transacted :— Com’r Gore brought under notice ihe question of trees overhanging and shading sidewalks. Someone might be found to cut the trees for the firewood they contained. It was decided that the overseer attend to the matter. When dealing with the overseer’s report, the chairman and two or three other members doubted win - i her a privateown rof land through which a public drain ran could be •ompelled to keep such drain clear.. I'he chairman said the Board had not yet got the necessary Acts for guidance, but thev had been sent f ° r - On Com’r Gor- ’s motion, secon- p ded by Com’r B aines, it was derided to approach Air Gaisford for the free gift of a town section upon which board offices may be erected. Among the correspondence were two or three rather lengthy letters dealing with nightsoil and the contractor’s methods. Explanations were given by the chairman and the overseer, who had investigated, and by their remarks there did not appear to be a great deal of room for complaint. The overseer said Mr Smith hastened to rectify any uiistake or accident when spoken to. Com’r Seymour said that no doubt in time the town would beadopting a water supply, and he thought itwould be a wise step to procure a reserve on the high level for a reservoir. After a little discussion it was resolved that the clerk write Mr Nelson, asking if he would be willing to sell half an acre on top of Stockade hill. The stray stock difficulty was discussed. One member said that on dark nights street - wandering animals were a positive' danger to pedestrians and vehicles; and unless the custom were stopped he supposed injury would be done to the new works the board is about to undertake. It was resolved, that notice be published that persons wilfully allowing their stock to stray will be prosecuted. It having been pointed out that the riverbed reserve is the nursery for stock that roam the streets, the board resolved to ask the railway authorities to allow the board’s ranger to impound from the reserve.

During a discussion resulting from the overseer’s report, Com’r Seymour said a good deal of work had been authorised, and if it is to be done it seemed advisable to gcAx casuai assistance. —The x said he had put on a casual hand s’ owing to a good deal of the foreman’s time being occupied with other duties of late. It was very necessary that some of the work should be done before the winter weather sets in.—Com’r Seymour that the overseer take on two additional hands, Messrs Phillips and*Fee to have preference if available/ —Com’r Gore thought that rather than employ a number of men, it would be better to call tenders for the work.—The motion was seconded ay the chairman and carried.
