—o—- — ’Frisco mail closes at the local office on 28th inst. at 5 p.m. Library trustees hold a meeting next Wednesday ovening. The school children have it pat that a school excursion takes place to Napier next Friday. The committee, however, do not appear to know anything about the mat ter. Up Auckland way one large landowner has, this season, put down about 20 acres in flax-plants. The good price and steady demand that has prevailed for fibre is sufficient inducement for the Aucklander to believe that profitable prices will continue, and that it will pay to cultivate flax. Miss Janie Williams, daughter of Mr Joseph Williams, racecourse, Waipukurau, is to be married at Wellington on 28th inst,, to MiFrank Martin, of that town. She leaves by express train tomorrow The young lady has lived here all her life, and has been the recipient of many handsome presents. All her friends will join in wishing her happiness. The next Maori census will be taken during the first week in April. A man, his wife and four children rode on one horse from Awatuna to the Egmont mountain house and back last week. The horse is still living. “ Barnum & Bailey’s” circus went through Waipuk this afternoon. From a daily paper: —Required, a man to milk and drive two ploughs. —Apply, etc. The Dannevirke doekey Club have decided to make substantial improvements to then- totalisator house, aud the proprietors are to be instructed to provide four machines. Over 100,000 people have died from sleeping sickness on Lake Victoria Nyanza in the last few and the report on Uganda states that the disease has begun to attack Europeans.
