For 1906.
0 Dreadful events are in store for us m 1906, according to the prophecy of Mdme. de Thebes, who has just issued her annual almanac. Her predictions, indeed, are enough to quake the stoutest heart. The civilised world is moulting, or, more poetically, is in the chrysalis stage. It has to go through much travail before it gets its wings, so to speak. “ Malaise universel ” is the complaint from which the new creature will suffer. A European war is not plainly written in the book of destiny, but, as Mdme. de Thebes sagely remarks, that does not say that the Continent will remain in peace. Social revolutions, political excitements of the most sensational kind, plots against sovereigns, financial disasters, pestilence, and other uncomfortable things are darkly hinted at. It would really seem as if dwellers on this terrestrial ball would do well to flee to Mars during 1906. It is hearty no place for the man that wants a quiet life. And we cannot forget that this depressing soothsayer has an immense prestige. She predicted the fire of the Bazar de Charite and all its horrors. The prophecy was in verse, as if to make it more remarkable.
