Dr. Behring’s Discovery
—o—- — of Dr Behring’s recent impoi* tant discovery for the cure of consumption, a contemporary says:— Briefly, it may be stated that it consists in impregnating the lung (or other) tissues of a person suffering from incipient tuberculosis with the (dead) poisonous products of the bacilli responsible for the disease in question. The effect is to render the parts so treated immune against the further ravages of the (living) bacilli. They find the soil distasteful to them, so to speak, and perish instead of multiplying; just as, for example, garden seeds would perish if sown in mould that had been previously saturated with some strong poison in solution. So says Dr. Behring. Pray heaven he is not mistaken. If not, then it is the greatest, grandest, discoverv of this or any other age, and the professor will .have richly earned the wealth and fame that is bound to be his.
