GOLD-BEARING STONE AT OPOTIKI
A PROMISING OUTLOOK
Tho wildest rumours (<nys the Opotiki Guarian) have been in circulation in Opotiki in regard to tho ieportod lidding ot gold near Tancatua, and a careful inquiry into tho mailer discloses ihc following fact?. Tho scene of tho dircovciy is un the Waimana Gorge Road, soma Ihrco miles from Tancatua, whore, during the process of widening tho road, the outcrop was discovered, All that has yet boon found are some dozen leadors, winch, on being crushed and panned out, showed a distinct colour of the precious metal, de' cidedly more than a more trace, which is the utmost that has previously been found in tho district.
Tho outcrop is located on Messrs Phil* lips and Fortune's property, who, between them, own some 000 acres', and who, to maid' their position a thoroughly sound one, have gone to tlio trouble of tilting out it prospecting license. Ihe leaders are encased in it good diss of country, from a mining point of viow, but of a'different class to lhat found in tho Haurnlu mines.
Some of the stone was sent up to Wailii to be tested and gave it result of about 10s per ton, but tho best parti of the samph's had previously been liken way, so there is a prospect of higher yields from tlio next lot, which is to be ral.en up for further tests within a Uvi diys by Mr. Fortune.
Tho stone gives sufficiently good propoets to warrant further development and Mr. Fortune, on behalf of Messrs Peebles, Phil ips and himself, who nro ilia orineipnls in the matter, fcoes tip to Auckland to form it syndicate and luvo tho find thoroughly prospected and tested. The services of a qualified prospector will be obtaiucd and ellirts mtido to locate the rocf, if such exists.
Tho parties interested are by no means over sanguine, but repeated erushings of dil'leront samples gave a uniformly good colour. Mr A. l'oeblcs, who holds a firstclass mine manager' 3 certificate, and has hud many years' experience in mining, speaks hopefully of tho find, but 11s an old hand, k not wishful to over nstim* ate Iho valuo of the discovery, or unduly boom it. Tho leadors found are more in pockets such as are often to bo met with in gold-bearing country, but Mr Peebles states the country surrounding them is of quite a different class to anything met with at tho Thames. For the sako of tho district, if only in regard to further prospocting work,'it is to bo hoped that success, even if it bo but comparatively moderate, will be the outcomo of the nutter.
