Important Exemptions to Clubs

WELLINGTON, this day. I'hk Houso went into committee \n night for tho further consideration of the rccommiltod clauses of the Licensing Bill. Mr. SeuMon moved the following now clause:— "Nothing in clause 59 (ina&ing clubs liablo to certain provisions of tho Licensing Acts) shall apply to cases whore, at meetings of any association, society, or club, bona fide engaged in legitimately carrying out literary or musical entertainments, or for Friendly Society, charitable or Masonic purposes, or outdoor gatuosand oxorciae, the refreshments supplied to members and thoirguostsatlho expense of tho aisooiotiou, society or club, 'ncludc liquor. This was read a second timo by 55 to 18. Tho clause was thou alfcarod, on Mr. Mftssev's motion, bv including agricultural societies within its provisions
Tho clause as amended wn then added to the Bill.
The Bill was reported and amondmocts agreed to. la tho courso of his reply m the brief debate on tho third reading, Mr Seddon said if any matotial alteration was made in tho Bill in tho Legislative Council he would be no party to placing it on the Statute Book. .
Tho Bill was passed through its final stages by f>2 to 10.
