The usual fortnightly mooting ol the Wftihi Borough Council was held Inst evening nt tho now Council Chambers. There wero present tho Mayor (in tho chair) and Councillors Campbell, Brown, Bybnrn, Saundois, Henderson, Donaldson, Slevin, Nowth, and Foster. Cr. Kalz sent an apology for his absence.

SAVAGE ROAD David Kobinson wrote drawing attontion to tho unsatisfactory condition of Savage Road, and requesting that repairs bo effected—Letter referred to tho Works Committee, tho ongmeer to report. REMISSION OF RATES Mrs M. J. Ton ratepayers and residents of River--1 bank Terraco petitioned for the lopair of ■ tho road. —Petition referred to tho Works i Committee, the ongineer to report, TUK GASWORKS, Max, D, King wroto offoring for sale , sections adjacent to the proposed sito for 1 tho gasworks. Tho Engineer statod thore was no necessity for Author land being secured, as tho land on which it was proposed to erect the works covered Qve acres, The letter was rocoived, Mr King to be . informed in terms of tho engineer's statement, , EAST COAST RAILWAY

"Tnatthis Board, in acknowledging with pleasure the fulfilment of the Minister for Public Works prouiiso to survey a further section of railway from Wailii into Kttli'iiUi, expresses very respectfully tbo liopo that the extension to Taurauga as a part of tho Tbauies-Gisbome trunk line may bo authorised as soon as public ongagomonis will permit of its energetic carrying on by tho completion now ponding of tho Waihi, Hukeronui, and Kawakawa sections.

"Previous act'on by your Borough Council is fully (ipprecintcd by my Board and your demands, in excess oi ours, aro almost all the line deserves; bnciuviowof the Railways Authorisation Bill now before Parliament it scorns most timely to stronglhou tho hands of lite Hon. Borridge, sanitary contractor, wrote ns follows in reference to complaints " In reply to your request for oxplauation ro complaints in sanitary service, I wish to state that ono of thouion in July met with an accident to his leg, which laid him up for a week, and being unable to procuro & man at a moment's notice his mato had to go on with the work by himself and got a bit behind by the end of tho week; and again in August the other man was laid up sick for a few days which then caused some of tho services to bo a fow days behind agaiu, I can assure you there has boen no wilful nogleot in performing tho work as I have mado ovory effort to keep services tegular." Cr Saundors moved as an amondnient that tho lettor be received, and that the writer bo informod that tho Couno'i has no money available for the purpose, Cr Campboll seconded, The amendment was oarried. Cr Donaldson then moved as a further amondmont that 15 bo voted. Ct Foster seconded. Ho said tho Council had voted largo sums for tho fmthernnco of borso-racing, football and cricket, neither of which appealed to the people generally so much as iho Horticultural Society,

The amondment was lost, and tho original motion, that Mr Hutchings bo informod that no funds arc availablo, was carried. WORKS COMMITTEE Tho roport of tho Works Committeo was as follows: " Committe recommend in reference to Mr. Edward's application for a road to his seotion that the Engineer make eouio improvement by cutting scrub, etc., along the tramline."
