The Daily Mail’s Tientsin correspondent ‘ states that Pekin was safe at noon. THE DEATH OF GEORGE GUNTHER CHARGE AGAINST MOFFIT. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, November 8. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day Francis Moffitt was charged with unlawfully killing George Gunther on the 31st October. Evidence was given to the effect that the deceased, who had been drinking, was admitted to the hospital with an fracture of the skull, and died next day. Dr. Fyffe stated that there were no external marks of violence other than the above. Witnesses said the deceased, who was under the influence of drink, accosted Moffitt, who told him to go away, and then struck him, the deceased, in falling, striking a window-sill. At the inquest the Coroner’s verdict was that death was due to a fracture of the skull. He was unable to say whether it was due to a fall or. not".' So far as Moffitt was concerned the case was one of pure misadventure. After hearing the repetition Of the evidence the accused pleaded not guilty, reserved his defence, and was committed for trial. Bail was allowed.
