THE FERRY SERVICE.
A NEVV S^AMER. (Per United Press Association.) ' INVEBGAEGILLi: November 7. In the course -of his speech <at Wmton to-night, the Premier said that the importance'of a daily connection between the two. islands joining--up with the last train at Lyttelton or; Wellington as_ the case-might be was generally recognised. For sometime past he had discussed with Sir James Mills, managing director of ; the Union Company, the importance of another steamer of the Maori class being put on this run, and he announced that, he was within the last few days advised by the Union Company that they had given j orders to build a steamer of the Maorij class, but larger and faster, to take tlie place of the Mararoa. With these two fine stoahiers there would be a connected service -byitho last express from the Smith Island and the last'express from the North Island and the advantage to the people Would be very great indeed. In his opinion, the^'woxild have between the two Islands ohe of ’the best if not the very best, steamer ferry'service in the world. It said mneh for the enterprise of the Union Steamship Companv that they’ were providing a second steamer, more, so as they receive no subsidy whatever from the Government beyond the: payments for carrying the mails. He .wishpd. to, pyblicly acknowledge the appreiciatioh,.gf the Government -of enterprise which....-involved- no doubt considerable financial risk to them and of what they had accomplished in this respect. ‘ 1 ::
